TUTOR GUIDELINES
- Introduce yourself & let student introduce him/herself
- Discuss what the student needs:
- What kind of computer/operating system does the student need to learn?
- What kind of computer will the student be using?
- Why does the student want to learn?
- Go over the Skills Assessment survey
- Teach at a beginner level
- Most your students will be seniors
- Set computer & chair at a comfortable level for the student
- Be patient and enthusiastic
- Be flexible and ready to adapt to individual learning styles and needs
- You probably will not get past the second or third lesson.
- Be neat and professional
- Be respectful
- Talk about opportunities available outside of class for the student to practice their new skills
- Ask library staff if you need anything special
- Give 24 hours notice if needing to cancel a session. Call the student and the library.
- Protect your student’s right to privacy and only discuss names and progress with library staff
- Detail student’s progress on the Progress Notes
- Take frequent breaks if needed
- Don’t be discouraged. It took a lot for someone to come forward and admit her/she needs help.
