TUTOR’S LESSON OUTLINES

 

Week One: Computer Orientation

 

Goal: To alleviate anxiety and give introductory information on computer hardware, software and beginning mouse skills

  • Use analogy of physical desktop to electronic desktop
  • Point out and explain the individual components of a computer setup and function of each – mouse, keyboard, monitor, computer (CPU), off/on switch
  • Begin to establish very basic mouse skills and develop a comfort zone moving the mouse around

 

Week Two: Mouse and Keyboard Skills

 

Goal: To provide advanced mouse skills and keyboard skills

  • Review and confirm basic mouse skills – Solitaire is good practice
  • Work on advanced mouse skills like double clicking, right clicking, dragging and dropping, highlighting & scrolling
  • Identify important keys on keyboard as Enter, space bar, Delete, Caps Lock, arrow keys, etc.
  • Use the library website for practice: www.phelpslibrary.org

 

Week Three: Windows XP or Vista and Desktop Skills

 

Goal: To provide knowledge of Windows XP or Vista and the desktop

  • Define the operating system
  • Start Menu
  • Programs – open an application
  • My Documents
  • My Computer
  • Recycle Bin
  • Simple Word functions like changing font size, bolding and italicizing text
  • Cutting, copying and pasting information from one document to another
  • Sizing windows- how to minimize, maximize and close
  • Working with multiple windows on the desktop
  • How to name and save a file
  • How to print a document
  • Creating shortcuts on desktop
  • Organizing desktop – create folders and move information into them

 

Week Four: Internet

 

Goal: To become familiar with basic searching on the Internet and understanding the basic concepts of the World Wide Web, browsers, search engines

  • Define the Internet/World Wide Web
  • Discuss specific terms such as link, web address, browser, URL
  • Detail buttons in the browser – home, back, refresh
  • Begin by using Phelps Library website to surf the web – www.phelpslibrary.org
  • Discuss search engines such as Google
  • Basic searching skill using a search engine, address bar & basically how to navigate through the site
  • Add a site to the favorites list
  • Select a home page

 

Week Five: Email

 

Goal: To provide knowledge to set-up, use and navigate a free email account

  • Understand the capability of a web-based email account and how to access from any networked device
  • Choose a free email product like Yahoo
  • Set up an account
  • Access and navigate the account
  • Opening email; reply to email
  • Delete an email
  • Organize email using folders
  • Forwarding email
  • Opening an attachment
